Start With You

Imagine it is the mid 1950's.

A Father walks home from work wearing a suit and carrying the evening paper under his arm.

As he walks in the door, exhausted from the day, his young son runs up to him and asks if they can go play catch in the yard.

Being exhausted but wanting to be a good Father, he designed a plan.

He opens the newspaper and finds a full page ad that features a picture of a world map.

He tore the ad out and ripped it into pieces, laying them on the coffee table.

The Dad said "Son, after you put this picture of the world together we will go have a catch," before settling down into his favorite chair to read the evening paper.

But, to his surprise, in very short order his son declared, "Dad, I am finished!"

In shock at how quickly the young man had put the make-shift puzzle together he asked "How did you do that so quickly?"

"It was simple, Dad. On the other side of the picture of the world, was a picture of a man. Once you put the man together, the world comes together."

I have heard different iterations of this story over the years, but my favorite is from old Earl Nightingale recordings.

To me the message is simple, clear and effective.

If you are personally struggling, don't try to fix anything until you fix yourself first.

Then, the rest of your world will come together.
